Reusable or single-use?: What buyers are asking - Tata Surgical at MEDICA 2026, Düsseldorf

One of the most common questions at MEDICA is whether to buy reusable or single-use instruments. The answer depends on how often an instrument is used, what it costs to reprocess and how important infection control and convenience are for the user.

The two options

Reusable Single-use
Material High-grade stainless steel Stainless steel or plastic
Use Cleaned and sterilised many times Used once, then discarded
Cost per use Low over the instrument’s life Same every time
Upfront cost Higher Lower
Needs Sterilisation department Storage space and waste handling
Typical users Hospitals and large clinics Clinics, emergency care, kits, field use

When reusable makes sense

  • High-use instruments in hospitals with a sterilisation department
  • Fine or complex instruments where quality matters most
  • Buyers focused on reducing waste over time

When single-use makes sense

  • Clinics without their own sterilisation
  • Emergency care, ambulances and field hospitals
  • Procedure kits, such as suture removal or dressing kits
  • Situations where cross-infection risk must be as low as possible

Quality still matters for single-use

A single-use instrument still has to work. Check that scissors cut cleanly, forceps grip and the sterile packaging is intact and clearly labelled with an expiry date.

The sustainability question

Many hospitals now weigh environmental impact. Reusable instruments create less waste, but use water and energy for reprocessing. See article 46 for more.

See both at Tata Surgical

Tata Surgical makes both reusable and single-use instruments, so we can give you an honest comparison. Visit Hall 10, Stand C32.
