MEDICA is international, but it takes place in Germany, and many of the people you meet will be German. A few simple habits help you make a good impression with German partners and with business people from every country.
Be on time
Punctuality matters. Arrive at your meetings on time, or a few minutes early. If you will be late, send a message before the meeting starts.
Greetings
- A firm handshake and eye contact is the normal greeting.
- Use surnames and titles until you are invited to use first names: “Herr Schmidt”, “Frau Dr. Müller”.
- A simple “Guten Tag” (good day) is appreciated, but English is fine for business.
Business cards
Bring plenty. Hand them over at the start or end of a meeting. Cards with English on one side are best for an international fair.
In the meeting
- Get to the point. German business culture values clear, direct communication.
- Bring facts: specifications, quantities and dates.
- Do not over-promise. Say what you can deliver.
- Small talk is usually short.
Decisions
German companies often decide carefully and in writing. Do not expect a final decision on the spot.
After the meeting
Send a short follow-up email within a few days, summarising what you discussed and the next steps.
Dress
Business casual is normal at MEDICA. Smart, clean and comfortable is the rule.
Welcome at Tata Surgical
