Pakistan vs Germany: What really decides quality - Tata Surgical at MEDICA 2026, Düsseldorf

A common question at MEDICA is whether instruments made in Pakistan are as good as those made in Germany. The honest answer: quality depends on the maker, the materials and the controls, not the country alone. Excellent and poor instruments are made in both places.

Sialkot and the German connection

Sialkot has made surgical instruments for well over a century. For decades, many European brands have bought instruments from Sialkot factories and finished, inspected or packed them in Europe. This is a normal and legal part of the industry, as long as labelling rules are followed.

What really decides quality

  • Steel: The grade and the supplier of the raw material.
  • Forging and machining: How accurately the shape is made.
  • Heat treatment: Correct hardness for each instrument type.
  • Finishing: Grinding, polishing and passivation.
  • Inspection: Every instrument checked before packing.
  • Quality system: ISO 13485 and documented processes.

How to judge a supplier

  1. Handle the instruments yourself (see Surgical instruments at MEDICA: what buyers should look for).
  2. Ask about each production step and which ones are done in-house.
  3. Check certificates and who issued them.
  4. Order samples and test them, ideally with surgeons.
  5. Visit the factory if you plan large orders (see Planning a factory visit to Sialkot after MEDICA).

The price difference

Instruments from Sialkot usually cost less, mainly because of lower labour costs, not lower standards. A well-run Sialkot factory can match the quality that hospitals need at a better price.
