A sterile surgical kit is a set of instruments and supplies for one procedure, packed and sterilised together, ready to open and use. Kits save time for clinics and reduce the risk of missing or unsterile items.
Common kits
- Suture and suture removal kits
- Dressing kits
- Minor surgery kits
- Circumcision kits
- IV and catheter insertion kits
- Dental extraction kits
- Spay and neuter kits for veterinary use
Questions to settle before ordering
- Contents: Exactly which instruments and supplies, in which sizes?
- Instrument type: Single-use steel, single-use plastic or reusable?
- Packaging: Peel pouch, tray with lid, or wrapped set?
- Sterilisation method: Ethylene oxide (EO), gamma or steam?
- Shelf life: How long does sterility last, and is it validated?
- Labelling: Your brand, languages, lot number, expiry date and symbols.
What to check in samples
- The seal on the pouch is complete and even
- Labels are clear and match your market’s rules
- Instruments are laid out in the order they are used
- Nothing moves or punctures the packaging in transit
Regulation
Sterile kits are regulated more strictly than non-sterile instruments. In the EU, a notified body must review the sterilisation (see EU MDR and CE marking: what to check at MEDICA). Ask your supplier for validation records.
Clean room production
Kits should be assembled and packed in a controlled clean room environment. Ask to see photos or certificates for the supplier’s clean room.
