Straight or curved?: Choosing Crile forceps - Tata Surgical, Crile forceps and surgical instruments

Crile forceps come with straight or curved jaws. Both clamp vessels and tissue; the difference is in how the surgeon sees and reaches the area. Most surgical sets include both.

Straight Crile forceps

  • Used on surface tissue and to hold sutures or drapes
  • Often used by the assistant to tag sutures
  • Easy to place in a straight line

Curved Crile forceps

  • Preferred for clamping vessels during dissection
  • The curve lets the surgeon see the tip and the tissue around it
  • Better for reaching around structures and in deeper areas
  • Makes tying under the clamp easier

How many in a set?

There is no single rule, but many basic and general surgery sets contain more curved than straight Crile forceps. Hospitals usually decide based on their surgeons’ preferences and the types of operations.

Tips for buyers

  • Check your hospital’s set lists before ordering
  • Order straight and curved as separate item codes
  • Make sure the curve is smooth and the same on every piece
  • Keep spares of the most used pattern

Single-use Crile forceps

For clinics without sterilisation, single-use sterile Crile forceps are available. They are useful in minor surgery and emergency kits (see Reusable or single-use instruments? What buyers are asking at MEDICA).
