A good Crile forceps can last for years if it is cared for correctly. Most early failures, such as stiff joints, rust spots or weak ratchets, come from how the instrument is cleaned and sterilised.
After use
- Wipe off blood and tissue straight away.
- Keep the forceps moist until cleaning. Dried blood is hard to remove from serrations.
- Open the forceps fully before cleaning.
Cleaning
- Clean manually with a soft brush, or in an ultrasonic cleaner or washer-disinfector
- Brush the serrations and the box lock carefully, where dirt collects
- Use detergents made for surgical instruments
- Rinse with demineralised water if possible
Inspection
Check every forceps before packing:
- Jaws meet evenly
- Ratchet holds each step
- No cracks at the box lock
- No rust or stains
Remove damaged forceps from use.
Lubrication
Apply instrument milk or a water-soluble lubricant to the box lock. Never use machine oil.
Sterilisation
- Steam sterilise (autoclave) following the instructions for use
- Close the ratchet on the first tooth only, or leave it open. A fully closed ratchet puts stress on the box lock during heating and can cause cracks over time.
- Dry completely before storage
Things to avoid
- Soaking in saline
- Bleach and chlorine products
- Using the forceps to grip hard objects, which bends the jaws
