Named after Dr Crile: Needle holder, retractor and more - Tata Surgical, Crile forceps and surgical instruments

Dr George Crile’s name appears on more than one instrument. Besides the famous hemostat, several other patterns carry his name. They often appear on hospital set lists, so buyers should know them.

Crile hemostatic forceps

The best known: a hemostat with fully serrated jaws, straight or curved (see What is a Crile forceps? Uses, design and sizes).

Crile-Wood needle holder

A popular needle holder with fine jaws, used for general surgery and suturing in many specialities. It is often made with tungsten carbide inserts, which grip the needle better and last longer. Common lengths range from about 15 to 20 cm.

Crile retractor

A double-ended hand-held retractor with blades of different sizes at each end. Assistants use it to hold back skin and tissue in shallow incisions.

Crile mosquito and baby Crile

Some catalogues list smaller, finer versions of the Crile hemostat, sometimes called “baby Crile”. Names vary between makers, so always check the length and jaw pattern.

Why names matter

The same name can refer to slightly different instruments in different catalogues. When ordering:

  • Use the pattern name and the catalogue number
  • State the length in cm or inches
  • State straight or curved
  • Note whether tungsten carbide inserts are needed
