Every day, surgeons around the world pick up a Crile forceps. The instrument is named after Dr George Washington Crile (1864–1943), an American surgeon from Cleveland, Ohio, whose work helped make surgery safer at the start of the 20th century.
A surgeon from Ohio
Crile was born in Ohio in 1864 and trained in medicine in the United States and Europe. He spent most of his career in Cleveland, where he became one of the best-known surgeons of his time.
What he is remembered for
- Surgical shock: He studied why patients collapsed during and after operations, and how to prevent it.
- Blood pressure in surgery: He helped introduce the measurement of blood pressure during operations. His book Blood Pressure in Surgery was published in 1903.
- Blood transfusion: He developed a method of direct transfusion from one person to another, years before blood banks existed.
- Shockless surgery: He combined general and local anaesthesia to reduce stress and shock, an approach he called anoci-association.
- The Cleveland Clinic: In 1921 he was one of the founders of the Cleveland Clinic, now one of the world’s leading hospitals.
Why a forceps carries his name
Controlling bleeding was central to Crile’s work. The artery forceps named after him has fine, fully serrated jaws that hold small blood vessels securely. More than a century later, it remains one of the most used hemostats in surgery (see What is a Crile forceps? Uses, design and sizes).
Military surgery
During the First World War, Crile served with an American hospital unit in France, where he applied his ideas on shock and transfusion to wounded soldiers.
His legacy in your instrument tray
Each time a surgeon clamps a bleeding vessel with a Crile forceps, they use an idea shaped by Crile’s lifelong focus: keep the patient stable and control blood loss.
