Fracture repair and joint surgery in animals use many of the same instruments as human orthopaedics, often in adapted sizes. Veterinary orthopaedic instruments therefore need the same quality as human ones.
Main instruments
- Bone holding forceps
- Rongeurs
- Bone cutters
- Periosteal elevators
- Bone curettes
- Hohmann and Gelpi retractors

- Easy to clean, especially serrations and joints
Sets
Clinics often start with a basic orthopaedic set and add specialised items as their caseload grows.
Building sets of veterinary orthopaedic instruments
Veterinary orthopaedic instruments are often grouped into sets for common procedures. For example, a fracture set may hold bone holding forceps, reduction forceps, elevators and a mallet. Therefore, start with the procedures your practice performs most often.
First, choose sizes that suit your patients. Small dogs and cats need finer tools, while large dogs need stronger ones. Next, check cutting edges, joints and springs on rongeurs and cutters. In addition, choose instruments that survive repeated autoclaving. As a result, the sets stay reliable for years.
Also, keep the sets complete and well labelled. Orthopaedic cases can be long, and missing items cause delays. However, it is wise to keep a few spare tools in a separate tray.
