Many instrument problems in Mexico, such as stains, spots and early rust, come from water quality and climate, not from the steel. Hard water in places like Mexico City and humid coastal climates both need extra care.
Hard water
Water in many Mexican cities has a high mineral content. It leaves white or rainbow-coloured spots and can encourage corrosion.
- Use demineralised or distilled water for the final rinse and for the autoclave
- Use detergents made for surgical instruments
- Clean steam generators and autoclaves regularly
Humidity
In coastal cities such as Veracruz, Cancún and Mérida, humidity can cause rust on poorly dried instruments.
- Dry instruments completely before storage
- Store them in dry, ventilated cupboards
- Keep packed instruments sealed until use
Good care routine
- Pre-clean straight after use. Do not let blood dry.
- Clean with joints open.
- Rinse with demineralised water.
- Dry completely.
- Lubricate joints with instrument milk.
- Sterilise according to the instructions.
Avoid
- Saline soaking
- Bleach and chlorine products
- Mixing damaged or chrome-plated instruments with stainless steel
