Hemostat or needle holder?: How to tell them apart - Tata Surgical

Short answer: A hemostat clamps blood vessels and has long, narrow jaws with horizontal serrations. A needle holder grips suture needles and has short, strong jaws with cross-hatched serrations. A hemostat and needle holder therefore look similar but do very different jobs.

Hemostat Needle holder
Job Clamp vessels, hold tissue Hold and drive needles
Jaws Long and narrow Short and strong
Serrations Horizontal lines Cross-hatched grid
Examples Mosquito, Crile, Kelly Mayo-Hegar, Crile-Wood
Gold handles? Rare Common (tungsten carbide)

Why you should not swap them

A hemostat cannot hold a needle firmly, and the needle can damage its fine jaws. A needle holder can crush tissue.

FAQ

Can a hemostat be used as a needle holder in an emergency? Possible, but not recommended. Use the right tool.

Why are needle holder jaws so short? Short jaws give more grip force on the needle.

Telling a hemostat and needle holder apart

A hemostat and needle holder are easy to mix up in a busy theatre. For example, both have finger rings and a ratchet. However, the jaws are different. A hemostat has long, narrow jaws with lines across them. In contrast, a needle holder has short, wide jaws with a criss-cross pattern, often with tungsten carbide inserts.

Therefore, check the jaws, not just the handles. In addition, many hospitals buy needle holders with gold handles, so that they are easy to spot. As a result, staff pick the right tool faster. The needle holder article explains its design in more detail.
