The Mayo-Hegar is the standard needle holder in general surgery. It holds the needle firmly while the surgeon places sutures. Mayo-Hegar needle holders are therefore found in nearly every general set.

Choosing Mayo-Hegar needle holders
Mayo-Hegar needle holders come in many lengths, so start with the depth of the wound. For example, a 14 cm holder suits skin closure, while a 20 cm holder reaches deep abdominal tissue. Therefore, most general sets include two or three sizes.
Next, look at the jaws. Plain steel jaws work well, but tungsten carbide inserts grip the needle better and last longer. In addition, the serrations should match the needle sizes you use most. Also, check the ratchet, because it must hold the needle firmly without slipping.
As a result, the surgeon can place sutures accurately and safely. The needle holder article explains other common patterns.
Finally, inspect the jaws regularly for wear. When the grip weakens, send the holder for repair or replace the inserts. To order Mayo-Hegar needle holders, request a quote.
