Field instrument care: Prevent rust and damage - Tata Surgical

Mud, manure and water are hard on steel. Good care in the field keeps instruments working for years.

After each use

  1. Rinse off dirt and blood straight away.
  2. Scrub with a brush, especially joints and serrations.
  3. Rinse and dry completely.
  4. Lubricate joints with instrument milk.

Back at the clinic

  • Clean thoroughly
  • Inspect for damage
  • Sterilise before the next clean procedure

Avoid

  • Leaving instruments wet in the vehicle
  • Bleach and harsh disinfectants on steel
  • Using surgical instruments as general tools
