What is a custom procedure pack?

A custom procedure pack holds everything for one procedure in one sterile pack. What goes in, who uses them and why hospitals are switching.

Custom procedure packs: Everything for one procedure - Tata Surgical

A custom procedure pack (or kit) brings together the instruments and supplies needed for one procedure, packed and sterilised together. Staff open one pack instead of collecting dozens of items. A custom procedure pack therefore saves time on every case.

What goes in

  • Single-use instruments, such as forceps, scissors and needle holders
  • Drapes, gauze and swabs
  • Bowls and trays
  • Other supplies the hospital specifies

Who uses them

  • Ambulatory surgery centres
  • Hospital operating theatres
  • Clinics and emergency departments
  • Dental, dermatology and podiatry practices

Why hospitals use them

  • Faster preparation and turnover
  • Fewer missing items
  • Less stock to manage
  • Lower risk of infection from reprocessing errors

Standard or custom?

Standard packs cover common procedures. Custom packs are built to a hospital’s own list.

Planning a custom procedure pack

A custom procedure pack works best for high-volume, routine procedures. Therefore, start with the cases your team performs most often. For example, a hospital may begin with a caesarean pack or a cataract pack.

First, list every item used in the procedure. Next, remove items that are rarely used. Then, agree the layout, so that items come out in the order they are needed. In addition, approve a sample pack before production. As a result, the final pack fits the team’s workflow.

Also, review the pack every few months. Surgeons may change their technique, and the pack should change with them. However, keep changes controlled, so that stock stays consistent.

The medical device overview explains why packs are regulated. To design a custom procedure pack, see our custom manufacturing page.
