Importing surgical instruments from Pakistan to Mexico is straightforward once the paperwork is in place. Most of the work is done once, at the start. After that, repeat orders follow the same simple routine.
Step 1: Register as an importer
Your company needs to be listed in Mexico’s importer registry (Padrón de Importadores) with the tax authority (SAT). Medical devices may also need a sector-specific registration. Your customs broker can confirm this.
Step 2: Get your COFEPRIS registration
Each product needs a sanitary registration (see COFEPRIS registration for surgical instruments: a guide for Mexican importers). Your supplier provides the technical documents.
Step 3: Choose a customs broker
In Mexico, imports are cleared by a licensed customs broker (agente aduanal). Choose one with experience in medical devices.
Step 4: Agree terms with your supplier
- Product list, prices and quantities
- Incoterm, such as FCA, CIF or DAP (see Payment terms and Incoterms explained for medical importers)
- Payment terms
- Labelling in Spanish (see Spanish labelling for imported surgical instruments in Mexico)
Step 5: Ship
Small orders usually go by courier or air freight. Large orders can go by sea to ports like Manzanillo or Veracruz (see Shipping surgical instruments from Pakistan to Mexico).
Step 6: Customs clearance
Your broker files the customs entry (pedimento) and pays duties and VAT (IVA) on your behalf. Typical documents:
- Commercial invoice
- Packing list
- Air waybill or bill of lading
- Certificate of origin
- COFEPRIS registration and import documents
Step 7: Receive and inspect
Check quantities and quality on arrival, and report any issues to your supplier straight away.
